Álvaro Laborinho Lúcioformer Minister of Justice and retired judge-adviser of the Supreme Court of Justice, died in the early hours of Thursdayat 83 years old, the news was confirmed to the Lusa agency by the mayor of Nazaré, Manuel Sequeira.
Between 1990 and 1996, he served as Secretary of State for Judicial Administration, Minister of Justice and Deputy to the Assembly of the Republic. Between 2003 and 2006, he was Minister of the Republic for the Azores, during the mandate of Jorge Sampaio.
Throughout his career, he stood out for his intense civic and academic activity, being author of books on justice, human rights and citizenshipand member of associations such as APAV and CRESCER-SER. He also held positions as Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal of Coimbra, inspector at the Public Ministry, Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, and director of the Judicial Police School and the Center for Judicial Studies.
Laborinho Lúcio was theawarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ and the Order of S. Raimundo de Peñaforte, received the title of honorary doctor from the University of Minho and, in 2023, he was awarded the Gold Medal Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
