Several thousand people gathered in Milan on Saturday for a large meeting in which several European far-right leaders took part, who defended their common positions on “remigration” and against community rules.
Called “Without fear: in Europe, bosses at home”, the demonstration organized on the Place du Dôme by the “Patriots for Europe”, one of the sovereignist groups in the European Parliament, lasted almost three hours.
Tribute to Orban
“Dear Viktor, you defended the borders and fought against human traffickers and arms dealers. Let us all continue this fight together, for freedom and legality,” said Matteo Salvini, secretary of the Italian far-right League (Lega) party, at the start of his speech, referring to the electoral defeat of Hungarian nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Facing a sea of Italian and League flags, Dutch far-right party leader Geert Wilders said: “Today the tragedy we predicted has become a reality: our people, the original inhabitants of Europe, have been hit by a tidal wave of mass immigration, illegal immigration, mainly from Islamic countries. »
Uninhibited xenophobia
The public repeatedly chanted “remigration”, this term which implies a policy of mass expulsion of foreigners or people of foreign origin.
The Frenchman Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally (RN), was the main personality of the meeting, in the absence of Hungarian or Spanish representatives. “Here in Milan, I have come to reassure you: our victory in the next presidential election is close. And we are preparing to say goodbye to Macron,” Jordan Bardella said in Italian.
“The Italian government is a friendly government”, “with which I hope we will have the opportunity to work tomorrow”, he underlined during a press briefing before the demonstration.
Counter-demonstration
A few hundred meters from the Dome, a counter-demonstration organized by several anti-fascist associations also brought together several thousand people behind a banner “Milan is a migrant” and Palestinian flags. A large police cordon separated the two camps.
In Barcelona on Saturday, an international gathering of progressives brought together Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Brazilian heads of state Lula and Mexican heads of state Claudia Sheinbaum, to “protect and strengthen” democracy.
