He’s the oldest working actor in the world, but that’s a poor compliment. Ruy de Carvalho is a huge actor, the most recognized and respected among all Portuguese actors. I saw him yesterday in Parliament, supported by a walking stick that suits him well, smiling at those who smiled at him, thanking him for the honor in the house of democracy after the scare that almost took him away from here.
Ruy was born at the beginning of the Estado Novo, in São Bento Salazar hadn’t even sat down yet and no one on the planet had heard of Hitler. He will be 100 years old in March and he no longer has to be grateful for anything. We do.
