The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) paid an additional 700 thousand euros to Social Security, referring to late payment interest, which increased to around 3.3 million euros the amount already paid and which was due in relation to the contract of former national coach Fernando Santos.
“The Portuguese Football Federation carried out additional settlement in the amount of 700 thousand euros relating to the process that was being carried out at Social Security regarding the contracts with the company Femacosa, concluded by the previous administration”, informed the FPF in statement.
In January, the FPF did not appeal the Social Security notification and collected an amount of R$2,603,838 relating to contributions considered missing in the period between December 2021 and December 2022.
“At the time, late payment interest was still outstanding, which has now been settled, as well as fines not yet accounted for, so the amount in question will be higher than the amount already settled”, can be read in the statement, where it is also mentioned that the FPF management “maintains an absolute commitment to good management and transparency practices, as well as the uncompromising defense of the good name and reputation of the Portuguese Football Federation”.
It is worth noting that the company Femacosa was created in 2014 to pay the fees of the former coach and the rest of the technical team.
Fernando Santos paid IRC through that company at a rate lower than the IRS level that would be required by his salary.
“Social Security imputes legal non-conformity to the labor architecture conceived in the period in question, based on the filing of several business companies to the detriment of the signing of a contract of a sporting nature with the technical committee – contrary to what was until then a common procedure and which is, moreover, practiced with the current national coach [Roberto Martínez, também contratado pelo antigo presidente Fernando Gomes]”, the FPF had revealed in January.
The FPF management explained at the time that “given the low probability of success of a possible challenge and the high associated costs, namely legal fees, increased late payment interest and increased fines”, it unanimously decided to “proceed with the immediate settlement of the outstanding amounts”.
Proença warned of the “highly serious and significant impact on the financial situation and budget balance of the FPF for the current season, which predicted a positive result of 3.1 million euros”. On the contrary, Fernando Gomes, president of the FPF between 2011 and 2025, asked at the time for the federation to “very seriously consider contesting” the payment claimed by Social Security.
