Police kill woman who stabbed child at Walmart

A terrifying scene was experienced in the parking lot of a Walmart in Omaha, Nebraska, when a 31-year-old woman, identified as Noemí Guzmán, was killed by police after taking a three-year-old child hostage and seriously injuring a child. The incident has put the debate on the follow-up of patients with severe psychiatric disorders back on the table.

KIDNAPPING WITH WHITE WEAPON

The events began inside the establishment, where Guzmán stole a large kitchen knife. With the gun in hand, he approached a minor who was in his shopping cart. Under violent pressure, the aggressor forced the child’s caregiver to walk in front of them, using the child as a human shield as she headed to the south exit of the premises.

THE OUTCOME: POLICE RESPONSE

The intervention of the authorities was almost immediate. Upon arriving at the parking lot, the agents confronted Guzmán, who was holding the knife near the minor’s body. Despite repeated orders from the officers to drop the weapon, the woman ignored the warnings and began physically attacking the child.

Given the brutality of the attack and the risk of a fatal outcome for the infantryman, two officers opened fire.

“Despite receiving multiple orders to drop the weapon, Guzmán refused and began stabbing the child. Given the imminent danger, two officers fired their service weapons.”

Guzmán was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

HEALTH STATUS OF THE MINOR AND FAILURES IN THE SYSTEM

The boy was rushed to Children’s Nebraska, suffering from deep wounds to his face and hand. After undergoing surgery, medical reports indicate that, fortunately, his life is not in danger and he is recovering.

The main criticism lies in the history of the aggressor. It was confirmed that in 2024, Guzmán had been found “not guilty by reason of insanity” in a previous arson case. Although he was undergoing court-ordered treatment, supervision failed, allowing a person with a highly dangerous history to wander armed in a public space.
