Men’s tennis dropped a nonconference match 9-0 to Stonehill College on Thursday, March 14.
The Lions dropped all three doubles matches to the Skyhawks at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex to give Stonehill an early 3-0 lead.
No. 1 doubles Austin Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) battled out an 8-5 loss. At No. 2, CCC Player of the Week Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tim Luz (Cumberland, R.I.) dropped their doubles match 8-0. The Skyhawks earned their third doubles point at No. 3 when Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) lost 8-1.
In singles competition, Steelman dropped both sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. McKay-Corkum played a close first set, 6-4, but dropped his second set 6-1, giving the Skyhawks their fifth point and securing the match win.
At No. 3 singles, Luz lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Perron lost at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0 and Paterno dropped his No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2. In the final singles competition, Thompson was edged 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets.
The Skyhawks compete in the Northeast-10 Conference, the largest Division II conference in the country.
The Lions, now 3-4 on the season, play their first conference match of the season at Curry College at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.
Senior captain Steelman spoke about his hopes for the upcoming match.
“It’s definitely a winnable match. We are looking to start [conference play] off on the right foot. We’ve had success over Curry in the past few years and we’re looking to play a lot better than we did today,” said Steelman.
The Lions’ first home match is at 3:30 p.m. on March 27.
