Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has argued at length for a strong Europe in the face of the United States, China and Russia.
“This is good news for Europe, very bad news for Vladimir Putin who, in his vain war of aggression that he is waging against Ukraine, is losing his main Trojan horse within the European Union.”
Asked by Andreea Axinte about the recent victory of Peter Magyar against Viktor Orbán in Hungary, Jean-Noël Barrot was also delighted “from the decline of populist or far-right political forces in the Netherlands, Denmark and Italy, before Hungary. This shows that Europeans are fully aware that their ability to resist the pressure of the new empires does not require a nationalist withdrawal but through a more sovereign, stronger Europe.”
“We must open a third way”
While former MP Élie Aboud suggested, ironically, erecting two statues of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Brussels, “to whom we owe the awakening of Europe”the minister confirmed the need to see the Old Continent “open a third path into which the vast majority of countries in the world will rush, which intend to remain free”.
Also facing China on the commercial level. “We must not be a spectator, but a committed actor. This is how I see the role of Europe, which must accelerate its transformation from a continent from consumer to producer. It is in this sense that we have been working for ten years in the service of greater sovereignty. We are obtaining initial results for the protection of sectors threatened by unfair competition by imposing European preference in public markets”recalled Mr. Barrot.
According to him, it is also necessary to invest “in the technologies which, tomorrow, will enter our daily lives, so as not to become a digital colony of the United States or China”.
The minister, questioned about the warming of relations with Great Britain, assured that the British authorities “will find arms wide open if they want to re-enter the single market, with its rights and duties”.
“More than ten countries want to join the European Union and no other political organization in the world can say the same”he insisted as if to show the strength of Europe. But, he also pressed, so that she gets up, “it is essential that France shows the way. Next year’s election will be important”.
