He emphasizes that “the phrase that motivated collective indignation and thousands of complaints at the ERC was said by a colleague who has the same profession” and that, even though they have “different styles and attitudes”, they share “the responsibility of having an open microphone for millions of people”.
Furtado continues: “I know what it’s like to have a lot of exposure (for good and for bad), but I also know what this responsibility represents for me, which implies management between the content we are presenting and an unequivocal dose of personal baggage that each communicator brings: their thinking”.
For this reason, he recognizes that “making mistakes in person happens”, just as it has happened to him, and that “apologizing and trying to do better is always an option”. But, he emphasizes“what was said (and other similar phrases in different situations over the years) came from a place where there is, in fact, no sense of the absolutely damaging impact that asking a question can have”, shoots, in the form of a reminder of other cases where Cristina Ferreira has already made clear her thoughts on issues of this kind. And she continues: “It’s not intentional, it’s structural. There is a sexist stance that is embraced by many women who say they are not feminists and it is indeed serious when this discourse is normalized, because this contributes greatly to the trivialization of crime, violence, gender inequality and, ultimately, the misogyny that is rampant in the so-called manosphere”, she further writes.
